Aizumi-cho is located in the northeast of Tokushima Prefecture. This area flourished especially from the Edo period to the Meiji period as a major manufacturing site for the Awa indigo dye "Sukumo." Throughout the four seasons people coexisted with indigo, and in the fall when the "Sukumo" dye-making process was carried out, the acrid aroma of fermentation filled the city.

Okumurake (the Okumura family) was created during the Edo period. In this indigo manufacturing area, all processes ranging from the cultivation of indigo plants, to the dye production, the processing and even the product sales were all carried out in this place. The Okumura family estate was built in 1808 and is known as one of the most prominent indigo estates in the prefecture in terms of both scale and content.

Ai-yashiki Okumura is a store operated by Okumura Shoji, located in front of the family estate, it sells indigo dyed products. Till this day the store preserves all the traditional production methods and only natural indigo dye is used.

Indigo dyeing is the process of using the natural fermentation of indigo plants to create a dye that is then used to dye cloths and threads. Nature plays a key role in creating indigo dye as each step utilizes the power of nature. Since nature is alive and always changing, it is difficult to calculate the exact technique and therefore takes more time and patience to complete the process. It is for this reason, the beautiful hues of indigo blue reflect the same richness and depth as nature, which has been entrancing people since ancient times.

At the back of Ai-yashiki Okumura, there is a dyeing facility where indigo dyers create their products day in and day out.
